Out & About SD: 12/02/19

Countdown to the end of 2019! This year has flown by, but there are still so many things to do; so much so that this may be one of the most packed Out and About posts yet! From lighting festivals for the family to races, from craft fairs for all your holiday needs to parades, get Out and About in San Diego this week and make some new memories to hold dear for a lifetime.

Friday, December 6th

Marching to the Beat of a Drummer Boy

Coronado marks the beginning of December holiday festivities with the arrival of Santa Claus aboard his ferryboat in the late afternoon. Come out to Coronado Ferry Landing to visit Jolly Saint Nick and then climb Snow Mountain whilst singing with carolers. Crafts and holiday shopping more your jam? A merchants’ open house will be running along Orange Avenue from 5 – 9 pm, while the Holiday Parade (6 pm), community band concert, and tree lighting (7 pm) take place over in Rotary Park.

Kicking Up Some Sand

Calling all Soccer/Futbol lovers! The US Beach Soccer National Championships are coming to San Diego in Mission Beach this Friday through Sunday. Come out and see the best teams and clubs from around the country as they compete for the final crown after a year of challenging games around the country.

Fill the Park with Lights and Song

This Friday and Saturday, enjoy special holiday foods from an assortment of food trucks and vendors, enjoy live music, and then head over to the Fleet Science Center to ice skate on their synthetic ice rink (science!); all museums will be free-of-charge from 5 – 9 pm! The park will ring with song, dance, and other fun attractions as it transforms into a winter wonderland this weekend. Don’t miss out on this annual event!

Head to the Mountains for Christmas Cheer!

Nestled up towards the east, Alpine doesn’t simply offer beautiful views of the mountains, sea, and snow, it also will be a center for food, music, holiday present ideas, and fun for everyone this Friday! The 24th Annual Parade of Lights and Snow Festival promises to get you into the holiday spirit as you carol around the tree lighting ceremony whilst sipping on hot cocoa in the chilly mountain air.

Saturday, December 7th

A Day of Remembrance for Lives Lost

December 7th is a day that will always live in infamy following the attack on Pearl Harbor 78 years ago. Join Pearl Harbor Survivor Clayton Schenkelberg and others in a wreath-laying ceremony and Air Group One flyover Saturday morning (9 am sharp) at the USS Midway Museum. This event is free and open to the public and will include free admission to the museum to those attending.

Jingle Bells Aren’t Just for Decking the Halls

Get out and about in Liberty Station with the annual Jingle Bell Run raising funds and awareness to cure the top cause of disability in the US on the behalf of The Arthritis Foundation. Lace-up your elf slippers and don your best holiday costume for this fun run starting bright and early in the morning.

Have even more pep in your step following the Jingle Bell Run? Head over to Powerhouse Park in Del Mar for the gorgeous Red Nose Run 3 or 5K benefitting Fresh Start Surgical Gifts and the Semper Fi Fund. Change out your costumes or wear your jingling attire from the morning for this fun run (with best costume prizes at the end!). Sandy running fun is just a few days away, so don’t miss out and register before time is up!

In addition to all of the holiday parades happening this Saturday and Sunday, craft fairs, festivals – some with live reindeer (!), live music, more carriage rides, tree lightings, Santa, holiday gifts, delicious food and drinks, and more will be lighting up San Diego from Coronado to Little Italy to Del Mar Come out and take part in ugly sweater contests and taste tamales in the tamale contest in Vista! Take part in making holiday crafts and see what local artisans have poured their passion into right on time for Christmas at the Broadway Pier. Go sledding, ride carnival rides, and get your face painted at Santee! More awaits at each of these destinations!

Race to the Limit

Break out your sturdy running shoes for the Del Dios Trail 5K, 10K, and half marathon this Sunday. Featuring dirt road courses and steep elevation changes, this is an endurance race that will put your trail running abilities to the test. Leave those 4x4s at home and test your own off-road racing skills on foot for a race to remember.
