Walking into an authentic barbershop is a unique experience! At the end of the 19th century and up to the beginning of the second world war, barber shops were rivaling taverns and bars in terms of popularity. They served as a ‘hang-out’ place for men, who came in not only for a shave or haircut but also to catch up on current news chat with friends. Many visitors would return weekly or even daily. This was the golden age of barbershops.
Barber Shops flourished until the consumer products giant, Gillette, introduced its safety razor and launched a massive marketing campaign positioning it as a safer and cheaper alternative. The Great Depression and the two world wars made it even worse – the pool clientele became smaller, and people were reluctant to spend cash on barber services. Later, the hippie culture brought shaggy styles in, and a trip to the barber became an entirely antique experience.
I’m so happy that is far from the truth today! I’m excited to introduce you to one of my favorite spot(s) in San Diego, Dame & Dapper Barber & Shave. At Dame & Dapper, they exemplify the legacy of the art of barbering. When you walk in you can tell that “old-school” barbershops are now back in trend, and, interestingly, this traditional art form has not changed much over the years. At Dame & Dapper, they embrace the traditional barbershop as a place with a welcoming, friendly atmosphere and dedicated professionals. In love with their trade, they understand men’s hair and how to have a good time while making you look good!
Dame & Dapper has two locations – one in the heart of Hillcrest on 5th Ave. and their second shop in Mission Hills on Washington St. D&D provides quality haircuts and straight razor shaves. Which if you’re not familiar with a straight razor, it’s a fantastic shave! So, the next time you’re ready to get “your ears lowered” or if you want to update your look give them a shot! Hang out for a little bit and feel the nostalgia of times past while bringing today’s fades into style. Trust me…. you’ll look and feel awesome!
